KENSINGTON LONDON: FACTS AND
RUMOURS

Kensington gets its name from a Saxon tribe
called the Kensings.
2. Kensington Palace
Gardens is one of the most expensive addresses in the
world - Lakshmi Mittal reputedly paid £57m for his 160
year old mansion and the street is also the London home
of the Sultan of Brunei.
3. In 1962 Hugh Gaitskell visited the Soviet Consulate
in Kensington Palace
Gardens to get a visa. He died three weeks later from
kidney and liver failure - possibly from hydralazine
poisoning from the tea he drank while waiting!
4. In 1977 a group of Kensington
squatters feared eviction from their home in Freston
Road and declared themselves The Republic of Frestonia.
They even appealed to the United Nations to send
peacekeeping troops to protect them from the bailiffs.
5. Kensington in London is a great place
to spot celebrities - recent reports include Kylie
Minogue, Lindsay Lohan, Richard Branson and Madonna -
all eating or shopping in the area.
6. The 2012 London Olympics will see the Triathlon and
Open Water Swimming competitions held in
Hyde Park, Kensington
London.
